Nearly 170 Millennium technologists from our offices in New York City, Miami, London, Dublin and Tel Aviv participated in our latest AI hackathon, following a successful hackathon that took place across our Asia technology hubs in May. 

Teams were challenged to leverage AI to create new solutions or enhance existing tools that either augmented their workflow or enhanced productivity.  

Winning teams presented ideas across a number of technical fields including agentic AI, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) and the use of Model Context Protocol (MCP) in workflow automation.   

Including those who took part in the hackathon, more than 1,000 technologists participated in the AI in AMER/EMEA event series. The two-week long series featured sessions with our Global Head of AI Gideon Mann and other senior technology leaders discussing the evolving AI landscape, training sessions on available AI tools and resources on how to utilize those tools.  

Congratulations to the winning hackathon teams, and thanks to all speakers and participants who made the series a success!

Millennium technologists across APAC participated in a hackathon focused on developing innovative AI tools. The hackathon took place over ten days in May and was part of Millennium’s AI in APAC event, which focused on enabling technology teams to leverage AI tools in their day-to-day workflow.

Over 130 employees participated in the hackathon, forming 30 teams across Singapore, Bengaluru, Hong Kong and Tokyo. Projects were aligned to three categories and judged on criteria such as how much time does this save users, how easy is it for other teams to use and the impact of the project on business outcomes. Project categories included creating the best:

  • Workflow automation  
  • AI assistant
  • Use of MCP Server

In addition to the hackathon, AI in APAC featured training sessions and presentations ranging from building AI assistants to data extraction using AI. Participants also took part in a daily prompt challenge, designing creative and effective prompts for AI systems.

Since its launch in April 2023, Millennium’s Miami-based Learning Engineering and Data (LEaD) program has become one of the many cornerstones for developing the firm’s early-career technology talent.

LEaD’s new entrants are grouped into cohorts to foster collaboration and shared learning. Two years into the program, Millennium is set to welcome our 5th LEaD cohort this Summer

This past summer, engineers from the inaugural LEaD class began completing the program and shifting into roles across one of Millennium’s four technology divisions. Additionally, Millennium has expanded the LEaD program to include LEaD interns, who joined as part of the firm’s global internship program.

As part of the global internship program, LEaD interns are exposed to a blend of classroom-style learning and hands-on work through the shadowing of a current LEaD engineer’s rotation. The inclusion of the intern program provides LEaD engineers with the opportunity to mentor the next generation of tech talent and develop their skills as people managers early in their careers.

“At Millennium, our LEaD engineers engage directly with technology leaders on high-impact projects while honing both technical and leadership skills,” said Steve Johnson, Head of LEaD. “It’s inspiring to interact with this talented group who are eager to explore the intersection of technology and finance and gain a holistic view of Millennium’s business. Over the last two years, the LEaD program has grown into a strong pipeline for talent in the Miami office, and I look forward to seeing their impact across the firm in the years to come.”

What does entrepreneurship mean within technology and why is it important to you?

Technology and innovation thrive on new ideas, and in a competitive market, I believe the ability to constantly challenge the status quo is what keeps organizations ahead. Throughout my career, I’ve always thought that when teams become complacent, they risk becoming stagnant. Repetition in our work can lead to missed opportunities. It’s an entrepreneurial mindset that brings new ideas to the table.

Technology breakthroughs come from not just emulating others but improving on existing ideas or rewriting the playbook altogether.

How can organizations cultivate a culture that empowers technology talent?

For technology teams to excel, I believe they must be empowered to leverage their skills to the fullest extent. This means creating a culture that allows for experimentation of new ideas and new technology.

At Millennium, our technologists collaborate closely with investment teams, gaining firsthand insights into their needs and building tailored tools to meet their specific objectives. This partnership fosters a dynamic exchange of ideas, where engineers, portfolio managers, and other critical stakeholders collaborate to develop solutions to new challenges and opportunities.

The goal is to achieve seamless alignment between technology and investment strategy. Rather than building in isolation, organizations must ensure that technologists understand the real-world problems they are solving.

How do you encourage technologists at Millennium to think entrepreneurially?

I believe almost every successful tool or process starts as a grassroots idea, and over time evolves to become integral to business operations. At Millennium, we encourage our teams to see beyond their immediate tasks and think about long-term impact. For example, the firm’s use of emerging technology like generative AI often begins as a proof of concept and evolves through continuous feedback, while scaling the use cases with the most potential.

How does fostering an entrepreneurial mindset translate into business impact?

From a technology standpoint, competitive advantage comes from being able to move faster, iterate smarter, and execute better than others. In rapidly evolving markets, this requires an entrepreneurial mindset and agile development process that is tied to the specific needs of the business. Our technologists don’t just write code, they are working to solve business problems in smarter and more efficient ways.

What initially led you to join Millennium?

When I began at the firm, I was excited about the opportunity to make a significant impact working with the commodities business, specifically the technology behind commodities trading. My previous experience ranged from running trading systems at investments banks and energy providers, to managing full front to back platforms and supporting application development.

Describe your day-to-day for us.

I currently oversee a team in Dublin and a team in London to enable projects that support Corporate Technology globally. In addition to my functional role, I’m also responsible for leading and developing the Corporate Technology organization in Dublin. Our teams are global, so I think it is important to maintain a one team mentality no matter where you are based. I visit London often, which helps foster connectivity, and emphasize collaboration despite the geographical distance between some of our offices.

In managing your own team, how do you foster career mobility?

My goal is to help team members navigate their career paths and be successful at Millennium by understanding their skills and interests and working with them to help them achieve their professional goals.

What advice do you have for someone seeking to join Millennium?

Mindset is so important. I look to bring in individuals with the right attitude, who have a willingness to learn and grow. I believe enthusiasm drives innovation, which can be crucial in this ever-evolving industry. Millennium is very much about the people who work here, and I’m always on the lookout for like-minded people to join.

Reflecting on your time at the firm, what are some highlights of Millennium’s culture?

Culture is what ties everything together at Millennium, with a strong emphasis on innovation. We are a large company, but we maintain a start-up mentality where new ideas are encouraged. There is a lot of energy around the growth of our Dublin office in particular, and it’s been exciting to be a part of that growth.

Pranat Pathak, Millennium’s Chief Information Officer, EMEA, and Global Head of Fixed Income, Commodities and Risk Technology, shares his perspective on the evolution of technology in investment management and what Millennium is doing to navigate rapidly evolving markets.

What trends are driving the evolution of technology at Millennium?

It’s hard to believe that next year will mark a decade since I joined Millennium and 25 years since I first started my career at the intersection of technology and finance. Today I lead a team of software engineers, data scientists and quant modelers in developing cutting-edge technology solutions for sophisticated portfolio managers.

To start with, markets are becoming increasingly complex and investment managers need new tools and data to help navigate this complexity. Technology is no longer just an enabler, but a gateway to accessing new markets and managing risk. This is particularly true in areas like systematic investing and derivative volatility trading that require specialized capabilities.

Additionally, portfolio managers are increasingly tech savvy. They often know how to code and in some cases are classically trained developers and engineers, pushing our technology teams to innovate and focus on higher value challenges for sophisticated users who understand the value that technology can provide.

Finally, as firms grow, there can be a constant tension between the need to scale while also providing customized service to the end users of their technology. At Millennium, we have over 330 investment teams and continue to grow, so we are constantly working to strike the right balance between customization and scale.

What is Millennium doing to stay ahead of these trends?

One of the primary ways we are working to stay ahead of these trends is through the development of our proprietary analytics platform that challenges the traditional way portfolio managers view risk and identify opportunities. By integrating five asset classes into a single analytical engine, we are providing our portfolio managers with a holistic view of the market and the ability to identify risk and opportunities that they might not have seen before.

How does the analytics platform work?

The platform provides a centralized suite of tools for portfolio managers that can help them to get a clearer view of the market and better manage their positions. At the same time, it gives portfolio managers the ability to plug into the underlying analytics library to build their own custom solutions. This ability to leverage centralized tools while also providing access to the underlying analytics is one way we are addressing the need for both customization and scale.

The platform also has its own version of an app store with dozens of tools for portfolio managers to leverage in their investment process. The tech behind the store allows for interoperability between applications, enabling portfolio managers to build their own dashboard composed of multiple applications that work together.

What can portfolio managers do today that they couldn’t do before?

While many innovations are coming out of investment management, one way that we believe our platform is differentiated from others is our cross-asset capabilities.

Historically, portfolio managers in our industry would specialize in one asset class because they often didn’t have the capability to trade across multiple asset classes. Today, one portfolio manager may trade across multiple asset classes.

We are building our platform so that asset classes can be treated consistently in a common model. This can help portfolio managers find trade opportunities between asset classes and risk manage positions across very different markets.

What is Millennium’s approach to building technology?

Our platform is an illustration of our approach to technology. We believe technology does not operate in a silo – we build technology in close partnership with our end users, who are often sophisticated portfolio managers who want and need cutting-edge technology. This partnership allows us to incorporate real-time feedback and ensures that our solutions are not only technically robust, but also practical, fit for purpose, and help drive business results.

Introduce yourself. What drew you to Millennium?

Millennium is a large global alternative investment manager with a strong reputation in the industry. The firm’s culture and values align with my own, fostering an inclusive and collaborative work environment that challenges and encourages individuals to reach their full potential.

What does Millennium’s presence in India look like today?

Millennium first opened an office in Bengaluru in 2022 with a long-term vision of building a global hub. Based on our early success of attracting tech talent and the strong talent pool in India, we have expanded other critical functions. Today, the firm has 250+ employees across our Bengaluru and Mumbai offices. In 2024, we also launched our inaugural summer internship class in India with plans to expand it over time.

What’s on the horizon for Millennium in India?

I’m excited about Millennium’s future in India. Our priority is to attract strong talent and foster their growth and development. We’re building teams in India that are leading initiatives at the firm and plan to continue hiring talented individuals who want to be challenged and grow their careers.

What’s your advice to anyone interested in getting their foot in the door at Millennium?

We seek candidates from various backgrounds, including from within and outside of financial services. One common factor is that we look for entrepreneurial minds – people who can turn ideas into opportunities. We are hiring across a number of teams and projects, with significant growth in areas such as technology, investment research, operations, HR and compliance. There are too many to mention here, so I will focus on the top three: First, there are many talented individuals here across several domains that are relevant to our business. Second, I believe the culture in India fosters innovation, collaboration and a conducive environment for talent to thrive – all consistent with Millennium’s operations. Third, India’s location enables our teams to be fully integrated into the firm’s global operating model and “follow the sun” approach, collaborating with colleagues across Asia, Europe and North America daily.
